Measuring pressure is often necessary to protect pipes, vessels and entire systems from unwanted overpressures. Excessive overpressure can cause systems to malfunction or even explode. By measuring pressure, over- or underpressure can be detected early and the system can be shut down, for example. When we talk about measuring pressure, a distinction is made between relative and absolute pressure. Relative pressure is the pressure measured relative to the current barometric pressure and is thus affected by the current weather. Absolute pressure is the pressure measured relative to absolute vacuum and thus is not influenced by the weather.

Wat is een drukmeter?

Een drukmeter is een meetinstrument dat de druk in een leiding, systeem of tank meet. Dit kan de druk van een vloeistof of gas zijn. Drukmeters zijn er in verschillende uitvoeringen, zoals manometers, drukschakelaars en druktransmitters. Een manometer meet en toont de druk op een analoge wijzerplaat of op een digitaal display. Een drukschakelaar bewaakt een te hoge of te lage druk door een ander apparaat in of uit te schakelen, maar kan ook een alarm doorgeven aan een sirene of flitslamp. De meest geavanceerde soort drukmeter is de druktransmitter, die de druk elektronisch meet en de meetwaarde via een uitgangssignaal doorstuurd naar een ander systeem, zoals een PLC of regelaar. Een druktransmitter kan worden uitgevoerd met of zonder display en communiceert met analoge of digitale uitgangssignalen. 

Hoe werkt een drukmeter?

Hoe een drukmeter werkt hangt of van het type drukmeter. Een analoge manometer werkt met een membraam of bourdonbuis die vervormen als de druk toeneemt. De beweging van het membraam of de bourdonbuis wordt omgezet naar een naald, waarme de druk is uit te lezen op de wijzerplaat van de manometer. Elektronische drukmeters werken vaak met een drukgevoelig element (piëzo) dat een elektrisch spanning genereert lineair aan de druk. De gegenereerde spanning wordt op de printplaat gemeten en omgevormd naar een analoge uitgang of een getoond op het display.

Welke soort druk bestaan er?

Als we praten over het meten van druk wordt er onderscheid gemaakt tussen relatieve en absolute druk. Relatieve druk is de druk gemeten ten opzichte van de huidige barometerstand en wordt dus beïnvloed door het actuele weer. Absolute druk is de druk gemeten ten opzichte van absoluut vacuüm en wordt dus niet beinvloed door het weer. De buitenluchtdruk zelf is in principe ook een absolute druk, maar wordt barometrische of atmosferische druk genoemd. Verschildruk is zoals de naam al doet vermoeden het verschil tussen twee (relatieve) drukken.
